The News Corner
As always, mind that most of the demo and intro releases are usually NOT mentioned in this newscorner (except if "final" versions of them have been released) as they happen at parties and there are just too many of them to cover all of them here. Just check out the party calendar. There you find links where to obtain the results & releases.
256 byte demo page
Justin Walemark aka Insomniac of Matrix-1995 recently put up a new page entirely dedicated to 256 byte demos. It's a fine catalogue with relatively long descriptions and even screenshots of most of the intros. The URL is www.256b.com.

More than 100 voters (mostly from Poland but also from other countries), a big variety of categories, and great design & music are waiting for you at the Addict website or scene.org. Planet #3 is scheduled for Mekka (April 13), vote for it online at Orange Juice!
All your base are belong to us
If you wonder where this quote that has recently become popular comes from: It appeared first in the intro of the European version of the game Zero Wing for Sega Mega Drive, released in the early 90ies. Obviously the Japanese producing company had some really bad translator. Read more in a FAQ on the game, and also check out this funny parody involving Saddam Hussein and G.W. Bush.
Analogik: New tunes
Various new chiptunes have been released by Analogik, just check them out at their website. The group has recently been joined by Edzes and Bacter (remember the first song of Hugi #16?), and Edzee has also already released a huge oldschool millennium-chip for Analogik.
Array: Kowboy joined
Kowboy: "I left Nextempire due to some conflicts concerning why I (we) do demos and such. All in all it led to me leaving Nextempire and joining up with Array." Kowboy also created a new website for himself. By the way: Array is going to release a "very original" and "really kool" 64k at Mekka.
BAFH: First artpack
The Bastard Artists from Hell (cool name, does anyone remember the shortstory "Bastard Operator from Hell"?) released BAFH Art Pack #1. It contains over 90 items in four categories: ASCII art, GFX, tracked music and code. A front-end for Windows has been included to simplify browsing and viewing the package. Comrade of BAFH recommends to check it out and promises that "it's got some nice stuff". You can download it at the BAFH site (4.8 mb). The second pack is planned still for April.

Cracktros
Scenet announced a new site focusing with the world of cracktros of the recent console scene: cracktro.de.
Damones: ReeBoK's new homepage
Damones' job offer from Orange Juice is fun enough to be included here as well: "Open job in Damones Alcohol-Media. We are looking for a gfx-artist (2/3-d) to join our derelict forces. We can offer an unhealthy environment filled with all kind of beverages. We hope you live in Finland, but also ppl from other countries can try us out as well. Damones have drinking tradition since -91 from Amigascene to PC. If you think you can handle at least 2dl of 96% per day, You're our Man! From a Finnish member active party presence is required. Alcohol problem is advantageous." Damones.net for more.
By the way, since the beginning of 2001 a.d. ReeBoK is having a new homepage. Visit it at the main location or the mirror scenelyrics.org.

Demo exhibition in Vienna?
Rumour has it that there is going to be an exhibition covering demos in Vienna/Austria. Organized by a team called [d]vision, it is going to be called "Electronic Kindergarten" and take place at WUK Vienna from May 18th to May 27th. The focus of this exhibition will be the computer technologies of the 80ies in comparison with contemporary tendencies in media culture. That is why demos and games are also going to be presented and discussed in a conference. I have not found an official announcement on the WWW so far, but keep an eye on the sites of [d]vision and WUK Vienna.
Details: GFX-only group
A new graphician-only group called "details" is looking for more members - newbies and experienced ones, just for fun. It was founded in February 2001, and it currently consists of ava, zeroic and piriste - ava, by the way, being one of the rare female graphicians in the scene! They're dreaming of releasing an artpack in fall (October-December) and before that, they might pull some small package together at Assembly. Contact information available at the Details website.
By the way, the Mekanisaatio party that was organized by zeroic will be back in 2002, thanks to all who took part this year!
Dev-C++ 4.0: Patch
A patch for Dev-C++ 4.0 is out, upgrading it to 4.01. You can also grab the sources (in Delphi) at CFXweb or Simtel.Net. Inferno's new online portfolio page, where you can find the most important information about him, is now online. According to d-lee, Exceed will skip Mekka, but release a lot of prods at Assembly, among them a hardware-accelerated intro. Besides, Enok and Net joined from Chrome.
Fairlight: Chip pack
For all chiptune lovers, Loonie, Norfair, Andromeda, Xerxes, Mick Rippon & Smash put together a little christmas chip pack. Fetch it at the Fairlight site! Also new is an idm/ambient tune by Andromeda, with only 25 kb in size for a change.
In January 2001 Fairlight reported at Orange Juice that they were looking for new members to work on their upcoming demos and projects. "2D artists, 3D artists/modellers capable of both high and low poly modelling, and Coders are all required (please, no more musicians). Those interested in joining our team should contact Graffik."
Farbrausch: .the .product final
Farbrausch released the final version of .the .product, the stunning 64k DEMO first presented at TP2k. Many compatibility issues were fixed, many more camera movements were included, and a hidden part was added. And yet, the size of the final .exe is only 63.5 - 512 bytes smaller than the party version. Get it & technical background information at the site especially created for this demo, theproduct.de.
By the way, there are several parodies to .the .product. One of them was released at Synthesis Party. It's called [IN-OFFICIAL] FR-09. From a review at the Calodox Demolinks Exchange: "Wow, this probably the best waste of space I've seen in years, especially since I have isdn. (Wer das Demo nicht groß macht, has es nicht kapiert - or something like that, I'm really not good at German.) I'm not expecting a final version, since this was perfect, with a compression ratio like 1:30000. The part I liked the most, was the music (an mp3 that took up 95% of the size, and only 3/5 of it was played). Actually this reminds me of a really shitty demo realeased at tp99, crappy music, lame flyby's of static scenes. But needless to say it won 1st place. P.S. Are the rumors about Elitegroup drinking 'Pepsi Max(tm)' for real?" Another one was made by the Australian demogroup i2pi. It's called "the crepes". Featuring a wicked end-scrolly You can get it from i2pi.com (38 kb). (BTW: Wicked webdesign!)
And some hidden keys, posted to CDE by Marconelly: "Press the 'F' key for fast-forward, 'R' to restart, 'A' to restart the current scene." There may be yet more keys.
Apart from all this, a new release of farbrausch's, the inofficial Mekka & Symposium invitation intro, is also worth a mention. Available at farb-rausch.com.
Foxfiber: Moving
Foxfiber moved to a new server. As a consequence of this 3dica ("the great 3D tutorial" that used to be hosted by Foxfiber) got its own domain. The addresses of the homepages of Malc, Frenzy and Factory also changed.
Fuzzion: ofFlimits musicdisk
Sml of Fuzzion announced at Orange Juice: "ofFlimitS is a compilation of the most famous Spanish intro64k modules including some info and a nice interface." You can download the Win or the Linux version at the Fuzzion site (2 mb).
Globbal: A new project
Adamm wrote at Orange Juice: "This new project should combine music, gfx, texts... There will be always a theme, an idea and everyone is encouraged to submit his/her portion: thoughts, music, pictures, photos... We want to discuss serious problems through high quality art. Right about now we're searching for members of 'jury' which will pick the best of submitted entries, suggest the themes etc. and we're also setting up the page and pondering over the themes. All suggestions warmly welcomed! Contact us!"
Gods: D.I.S.C. #11 is out!! & more
After six years of silence, there's a new issue of D.I.S.C.! Music by Chromag, Curt Cool and Marc, graphics by Made, Beast, Wade, Bridgeclaw, Optic, Shade and others, texts by "many, many talented editors, too many to mention" (Ghandy), a mag engine by Cupid, an intro by tricktrax, and, most importantly, 120 articles will occupy the Amiga lover for a whole week. Also runs with WinUAE, just make sure that you create a volume called fonts pointing to the subdirectory that stores the fonts included in the D.I.S.C. package. Amigascene.org is keeping it warm for you.
Odin of Gods also released GAudio 2.0.0 SDK. New features: the MPEG part was replaced by a very fast routine that now also supports MP1 and MP2, the S3M format was added, the API structure was redesigned, a software mixer routine was added, tracker replayer bugs were fixed, DSP functionality was added, MOD playback now supports up to 16 channels, Audio CD management is also working now, 3D Sound with an EAX algorithm through DirectSound was added and there's now a better cooperative level between GAudio, Wavemapper and DirectSound. Get the lib at Odin's site.
Finally, Odin created a demo in Java you can see directly online. It uses a 3d engine especially conceived for the web called "OZOS Web", including flat shading, linear/logarithmic fog, a native Lightwave 6 parser, parental objects, morphing, inverse kinematic, etc. in less than 40 of code. The engine is also able to draw a scene of thousands of polygons with a very decent frame rate even on a 1024x768x24bpp screen browser (70 fps on a good system). This demo, with a size of 1 mb and a length of 4:20 minutes, shows some features of that engine. Also available at Odin's site.
Greenroom: New Music Collection
"Greenroom is setting up a new fantastic online music collection, destined to crush all other such collections", says Tomcat, emphasizing that the word "fantastic" and "other stuff" do not originate from him but reflect the opinion of those who saw it.
The name of this collection, which will perhaps be online before Mekka & Symposium, is MusIce. It will first feature 1000 tunes and be continuously updated. People can upload their music. The staff is also looking for raters! By the way, MusIce is an Orange Juice Partner Site.
Headcrash: DOS driver needed?
Ctulhu's new web-project to help stressed demosceners with graphics and sound in DOS-demos is www.dosdriver.de - as the name says, a collection of MS-DOS drivers for various hardware devices.
Hellven: New prominent members
Virt and Hunz/fm have joined Hellven and released some new tracks under its label. Definitely a group demomusic lovers should keep an eye on!

Hugi: Hugi 20 Russian final
The final version of Hugi 20 Russian edition, with translations of almost all articles (except shortstories and poetry), is now available at the Hugi website. Another news: CFXweb is hosting the online edition of Hugi 21. In April Ghandy left Hugi and Gods in order to focus on Darkage.

The Hungarian Scene Page (maintained by Trajic of Rhyme) has moved from scene-hu.com to demoscene.hu.

Iris: EC#42/Amiga out!
The Official Eurochart issue 42 for the Amiga is out. Cool articles, many of them diskmag-related (e.g. the making of D.I.S.C. and the feelings of its main editor after the release). Runs on WinUAE, but you need the xpkmaster library - download it and install it by copying it into the libs: volume using the Shell, then get the zine (consisting of two LHA files!!) from the Iris HQ (1.6 mb). The deadline for Eurochart #43 is April 31!
Kolor: Fresnel 2 final

Less Music Productions: New releases
LESS Music Production's 3rd "Music Disk" was released on 29th January 2001 - with graphics & code by SoLoRiZe plus song by various artists. The total size is 11 mb. "This is the second part of LESS Music Productions Music disk 'HEXOLOGY'", writes SoLoRiZe. "HEXOLOGY is programmed in Visual Basic, HTML & Java, with music in MP3 and XM format." Available at ukscene.org (11.1 mb).
LMP also released a Flash-4 demo - DappaTro. With music by SoLoRiZe and a size of 300 kb. Also at ukscene.org (440 kb).
Regarding LMP's diskmag LEM, SoLoRiZe would like to say: "I am still in need of more music related articles for LEM2. Articles that I am looking for are music reviews, tracking tips, mp3 creation tips, the best mp3 encoders, tracking programs etc. - tracking/mp3 program news/development." For more information on LEM2 visit the Less Music Productions homepage.
Level-D: EChO has a new homepage
After a long time not updating his site, EChO created a new one, with a new address.

Linux scene: New IRC channel
The #Linuxscn channel on IRCNet is closed. Now you have to join #demoscene on OpenProject network if you want to meet Linux and opensource demo sceners. To connect to OpenProject, use the server irc.linux.org. Jylam: "Come on, talk to us about the demoscene, Linux, penguins, and sometimes what's the strongest animal living in Russia!" Also the URL of the channel website has changed: from linuxscn.org to lnxscene.org - including a new design, new site engine, and most Linux intros, demos, and tiny prods.
Macaw: "Nean der taler" Source
Macaw released the source code of the intro "nean der taler", placed second at The Party 2000. See it at Macaw's site. The funny thing about it: Had he not released the source, nobody would have detected that "nean der taler" contained a routine (the Escher knot effect) directly copied from a demo-program written by Oliver Nash, the brother of Paradox/Vivid. The discovery of this "rip" led to a debate at the Calodox Demolinks Exchange in which Macaw defended himself with the argument that the same effect was used in Amiga demos long ago and that he did not claim that it was his invention.
Merregnon: More tunes
The Merregnon website features new (free) music, e.g. by Nebularia (Tomi Jylhae-Ollila, known for his renewal of the Turrican II title). Of course the full soundtrack CD is still for sale at the same location.

The first event is held to gather the interest of the scene. If the feedback is massive and positive, m00ziQ will become periodic. More at Aienn's site.
Moppi: New version of Demopaja
Memon of Moppi announces that the SDK for the OpenGL-based demo-authoring tool Demopaja and a new version of the editor are out. "Beside the stuff to code plugins the SDK also contains source/lib to play the files created using the Demopaja. There is option to compile the plugins with the player, so no-one can rip your plugins if you decide to distribute the demo." Get it at the Demopaja website.
Nah-kolor: No new mag project
Devotion is dead (as main editor Darkus has left the Amiga scene) and no longer a Nah-kolor production. The rumours spread at Scenet using Magic's name saying that Nah-kolor would be working on a new magazine are false, Magic informed me via email. Apart from that there have been a few changes in the member structure of Nah-kolor (e.g. Klod left the scene because he took over his parents' company), and the 59th issue of the Amiga packmag Speed has been released.
NAID: An American scene portal
Etienne Caron (aka Mr. Khan), organizer of NAID 95 and 96, has created a new scene portal - naid.net. "Our site concerns itself with the demoscene in general, and the North American scene in particular. You'll find cool demo reviews, quirky technology reviews, anything and everything related to the technological revolution in the Arts world. All are welcome to contribute and participate. We have forums, a news discussion system, reviews, tutorials, the works."

SIGGRAPH - I

Excellently written, both Civax and I think.
The deadline for demo submissions for Siggraph, by the way, was March 21 - I hope that you didn't miss it in case you planned to submit your artwork!
Current news on the Demoscene @ SIGGRAPH: siggraph.scene.org
SIGGRAPH - II
Mercator wants to inform that - apart from the current efforts to cover the demoscene at Siggraph - there is a kind of demo contest at Siggraph called Web3d Roundup.
"The web3d roundup is an event organized by the web3d consortium and is held at two conferences every year - the Siggraph and the VRML/Web3d conference.
I participated in it for the first time in 1998 with our company Geometrek. Our company started as a kind of 'demoscene-spirit' company because members (not employees) only work just for fun and are spread all over the world. We're doing all kind of web3d (mainly VRML) content and develop an own web3d multiuser server/client (check out www.geometrek.com if you want)
The reason why I tell you all that stuff is because the main goal of the web3d Roundup is to show new web3d stuff - for instance new web3d clients, new innovative content, fast rendering of big worlds or whatever.
We presented the first VRML demo there (self-running + sound). We participated in it every time since 1998.
If you're interested in participating in the Web3d Roundup, I can try to help you. I know the organizer Timothy Childs very well.
You should know that it's not easy at all to get into Siggraph!!! It's easier to get into the contest at the VRML/WEB3d conference because the quality of the entries is not that high there.
The web3d roundup is the wrong place for pure 3d demos. You must demonstrate something innovative. All demonstrators talk to the demos there - people wouldn't understand your demo if you just let it run. Most of the stuff are dull and boring business demos.
I forgot to say that the best demonstration gets a price. There are categories like 'best business demo', 'best entertainment demonstration', 'best educational demo',...."
South African scene archive
Eclipse reports that he and others are busy launching a South African demo archive "for all those with Nostalgia".

Threesome: Beef 96 (BSE-free?)
"Some of you may remember an obscure little demo called Beef 96", Miss Saigon writes to comp.sys.ibm.pc.demos. "It started at a little party (Half-Impulse) as a song made up by some Canadian guys from Force 10 about cooking steaks and drinking beer. We thought it was funny, so we made a wav of it. Then GD and Phoenix and Necros and the Canadians and pretty much everybody who was at the party started making pictures to illustrate the song. Finally, Necros filled in some gaps in the song and coded a little slideshow out of the pictures, and the original Beef 96 was born. Now, five years later, Beef 96 lives again. Out of my sense of duty to the scene (and because I had to do it for my Flash class), I give to you the 5th anniversary Flash edition of Beef 96. Even if you never saw the original, this one is worth checking out." You can view it at Miss Saigon's homepage.
TRSI: Co-op demo with Amuq

Wild Bits: Wilby #6 released!
On April 10 (one day before this Hugi issue) Wilby #6, the 4096 bytes diskmag, was finally released. It also took part in the 4k intro compo of the Xuventude Galicia Net Party 2001. Not much content this time, though. Get it at Spock's homepage.
WildMag: Issue 4 coming after Mekka
The fourth issue of the German-language diskmag WildMag will be released shortly after Mekka & Symposium 2001. Contrary to original plans, this issue will not be dealing with the topic "pixel graphics" as the staff did not receive enough articles on it. Instead, it will be a "Mekka 2001 Special". Mad/os and The Update are planning to do a lot of interviews and surveys at the party. There are going to be live reports and probably a lot of spontaneous ideas. All in all this issue is supposed to become more wild than its predecessors - whatever this means. Get the first three issues at the Wildmag site.
Woorlic was not bought by M$!
It was obvious that the announcement Woorlic spread on April 1st about their being bought by Microsoft was at best wishful thinking, unless it was just a rather unspectacular April fools joke. Now, however, the "almighty Joris Beltskijv makes the statement about the prank". Read about this "groundbreaking news" at woorlic.org. Right!
