The Editor's Paranoia

Adok/Hugi

Imagine that you have written a very opinionated, emotional or personal text and have it published in a magazine. What can happen to you?

You can get positive feedback. Mostly likely you will be happy that someone seems to have liked your article and maybe have profited from it.

You can get constructive criticism. Maybe you have written too emotionally about something, without reflecting on its rational advantages or disadvantages. The reader explains what could be improved in your way of thinking or in your writing. You can accept or reject this criticism. Accepting is better, in a critical way of course. If it is logical and disproves an earlier view of yours, be ready to enhance your wisdom with it.

You can get negative, destructive feedback. This is certainly not very motivating. You may even feel attacked personally. But as the critic does not include any rational arguments, this is nothing to take to heart. Just read it through and discard it. Only if the amount of such feedback is high, think what might have been its cause.

These are types of immediate response. But isn't there more? Imagine, maybe your stuff is read by secret agents, who try to filter out your personal data, views and anything that could be done to harm you and collect it in databases!

On the other hand, your texts might also be recorded by job agents and one day you could get a great job offer. Or, maybe your texts are collected and published under a different name for money without you taking notice of it!

Sure, all of this is possible. The question is, is it likely to happen? Actually we cannot give an answer to this because, who really knows what is done with your texts secretly? And this does not only apply to texts published in magazines, it also applies to e-mail and any kinds of messages, even demos which have a message.

But an important aspect has been yet ignored: Why do you write such texts? For fun, to express yourself or to have a certain impact, like, manipulate other people in their views or advertise for your projects?

I guess weirdos like us diskmag writers have no reason for being too paranoid. (Really?)
