How to start a demogroup - Part 1

archaos^tear

Well, the very first thing you need when starting a group, is a clear picture (preferably in your head) of what you want to achive. Maybe not even as much as a picture, but a vague idea, ideology or something should be the backbone of the group. If your group has a clear profile, everything will be much easier, from planning productions to verbosing members. Here follows a short list of different stereotypes that have emerged in the scene over the past years (I mean no offence to all groups named in the different types. Every group is unique, but some guidance is requiered for the new ones. ;)) This is so that you can get a general idea of what you want to achieve with your demos.

1. Traditional demogroups.

Description: This is the most common type of demogroup. Has a bunch of members, often two of each sort (no, not for mating ;)). Quite active, release a least one production at every major sceneevent, often place amongst the top-10 entries.

Examples: Future Crew (pre F.R.), Surprise!Productions, Pulse.

2. Wierd/dezine groups

Description: Beware of these people, they are mighty wierd. Release either cute 64k-intros, small dezinedemos (<500k) or huge bautaproductions. Often these groups are composed of 3.2*10^3 musicians, a similar amount of gfx-people and two coders. ;) The code is either very basic or a jawdropper.

Examples: Haujobb, hellcore, tpolm, woorlic(?).

3. Collectives

Description: As the name implies these group consist of a whole bunch of people. These groups do some releases under a collective name but that's very rare. In Sweden (well Stockholm anyway =)) these groups are synonymous with a bunch of kids with little or none musical skills wanting to be able to put something in the "Affiliations"-field at traxinspace.com.

Examples: Ehm... actually only KFMF comes to mind.

4. Legends

Description: Groups that changed the scene for ever. 'Nuff said.

Examples: None mentioned, none forgotten. ;)

5. Semiserious groups.

Description: A group where all, or at least a majority of the members, have Quake as their favourite partyactivity. A variant is a group where no one gives a shit.

Examples: tear ;), N'r'U (dog ni efter dreamhack eller? Hör av er!)

Conclusion

Well, that's it for this time. I'm gonna leave you with a list of demos that are you are recomended to watch, in order to decide what kind of group you want to start (sorted after type):

WARNING! THESE ARE JUST VIEWING TIPS. NO FLAMING PLEASE!!
